I read this article in the paper last week some time. And I read it a couple of times to make sure I hadn’t missed something important. No matter how many times I read it…I am still left saying “huh?” You just can’t argue with their logic…but still. It’s no wonder our country is in the mess it is in. Here, read for yourself:
NONSMOKERS COST SOCIETY TOO (WASHINGTON)–Smoking takes years off your life and adds to the cost of health care. Yet nonsmokers cost society money, too–by living longer. House members described huge health care costs associated with smoking as they approved legislation last week giving the FDA authority to regulate tobacco products. No one mentioned the additional costs to society of caring for a nonsmoking population that lives longer. (Associated Press)
I love it. Talk about triangulation … let’s blame all the healthy people now.
So … if I really love America … and want to do my part to save society some money I need a plan.
I think I will start smoking. I will quit even thinking about exercising. I’ll also need to change my eating habits. It will no longer just be dessert for dinner in my world. It will now be dessert for every meal. Why would I make such sacrifices? Because I’ll do anything to save someone some money.
How ’bout the rest of you … how far will you go in order to make sure you don’t live too long and possibly become a burden on society?
ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU…?? I GUESS IN ORDER TO SAVE THE ECONOMY I’LL HAVE TO DO MY PART AND EAT MORE JUNK FOOD AND CONTINUE IGNORING MY TREADMILL. I SURE WOULD HATE TO COST THE GOVERNMENT MORE BY LIVING LONGER! THAT WAS JUST THE SILLIEST THING I HAD READ IN QUITE AWHILE…
The last time I checked both smokers and non-smokers were tax paying citizens. Who is this “society” who incurs all these costs for us? I’d like to meet them. I have a few bills I would like to get them to pay.
Who would have anticipated that lengthening the human life-span would be so costly? You mean old people (like me) still have to eat and stay warm? That is just so unfair. What a shame to waste so much food and energy healthy old folks.
But okay, Sherry and Paige…I’ll do my part too…I promise to stay in my recliner one extra day per week. Think of the gas and frustration saved by other drivers not having to pass me as I putter along the highway. Oh well.
You’re right, Sherry, that was one silly article. Let me take a wild guess though…do you think the author was a smoker?
IF YOU FIND THIS “SOCIETY” AND THEY START PAYING YOUR BILLS, YOU BETTER LET ME IN ON THE DEAL TOO! LIVING LONGER IS JUST SO EXPENSIVE…HOW UNFAIR IS THAT!?! AND WHO KNEW THAT EXPENSES JUST CONTINUE NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU LIVE? I THOUGHT THERE WAS A MAGIC AGE WHEN EVERYTHING BECAME FREE OF CHARGE…I’M SO DISAPPOINTED!
What Doug said!
Let’s all start smoking! Although, that makes me a little sick at my stomach just thinking about it!
MAKES ME A LITTLE SICK IN MY LUNGS!
